The permeability of magnetic materials is rarely expressed in terms of absolute permeability. The usual mode is in terms of relative permeability. AC Filter A filter circuit that removes unwanted frequencies (harmonics) from a mostly AC current. This would include some EMI filters. Air Cooled A means to cool a section of an electromagnet by forcing air to cross its surface to cool. Air Gap A non-magnetic discontinuity in a ferro-magnetic circuit. For example, the space between the poles of a magnet, although filled with brass or wood or any other non-magnetic material, is nevertheless called an air gap. Amorphous Refers to magnetic materials that are metallurgically non-crystalline in nature. Ampere-Turns Per Meter The MKSA unit of magnetizing force, H. Ampere's Law defines it. The ampere-turns are per meter of magnetic path length. Anisotropic Having properties which are dependent upon direction within the material. See also, "isotropic" and "grain oriented". Anneal A heat treatment given to soften the material for further cold working (such as cold rolling, forming, or drawing). Annulus The distance from the I.D. of the case material to the O.D. of the conducting section. As Rolled No heat-treating is done after rolling to final thickness. Depending on the nature of the specific material, the amount of cold reduction usually varies between 50 and 90%. Average Winding Temperature The temperature of the internal windings of a shaped field electromagnet after stabilization has been reached. AWG American Wire Gauge. A gauging system used to size magnet wire. Please send all web related questions/comments to the Webmaster. TOP | BACK | HOME | HELP | MAP | CONTACT |
